Zonta International Convention in Yokohama, Japan

From June 29th until July 3rd, 2018, over 2000 Zonta members from all around the world met together in Yokohama, Japan for their 64th International Convention.  Zonta International Conventions are held every two years in a variety of locations around the globe, although this was the first one to be held in Japan. In addition to Zontians from all over Europe, the US, Canada, and Australia/New Zealand, this convention was especially well attended by Zonta members from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and other countries in south east and central Asia.

Among the Keynote Speakers were the Honorable Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand; Naoko Yamazaki, Space Shuttle Discovery crew member, and one of only two Japanese women to qualify as an astronaut; and Saanya Subasinghe, an amazing young woman from Sri Lanka, who was a 2017 YWPA award winner and will be starting at Columbia University in  NYC this fall.

Our District 9 members were “out in force” at the Convention, being ranked 3rd in donations to the Zonta International Foundation during the event, and we were honored to have Dr. Sharon  Langenbeck, former Amelia Earhart Fellow and ZI Vice-President who was resoundingly elected by convention delegates as our International President-Elect for the next biennium.  Zonta Club of Berkeley/ North Bay was represented by Delegate Sue Fischer, and Alternate Cheryl MacGregor.
